Rotation Sites

George Washington University Medical Center (GW) is a 371-bed level 1 trauma center, major tertiary care referral center, and is the principal academic teaching hospital of the residency. The medical center is located at the heart of the nation's capital in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood next to the Department of State and less than a mile from the White House. There is extensive exposure to major and minor adult trauma, and broad exposure to routine and complex orthopaedic procedures with dedicated rotations in sports medicine, shoulder and elbow, foot and ankle, spine, trauma, hand, and adult reconstruction. Residents play a major role in longitudinal care of patients, from the emergency department, to inpatient care, surgery, and outpatient management. Residents rotate throughout all five years of residency. Junior resident call is taken in-house.

Washington Hospital Center (WHC) is a 926-bed hospital, major tertiary care referral center, and the other adult level 1 trauma center in the district. There is intensive exposure to complex high-energy adult trauma in the emergency department, inpatient setting, and operating room. Residents have a high-volume operative experience in trauma, spine, sports, adult reconstruction, hand, foot and ankle, and oncology. Residents rotate during their PGY-2 and PGY-5 years and work on the same team as orthopaedic surgery residents from Georgetown University. Junior resident call is taken in-house.

Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) is a 323-bed pediatric level 1 trauma center, major tertiary care referral center, and is consistently ranked as one of the best pediatric medical centers in the nation. There is wide exposure to pediatric trauma, as well as congenital and acquired pediatric musculoskeletal disease. In addition to routine orthopaedic pediatric care, residents are exposed to a number of complex surgeries working with dedicated specialists in pediatric sports, hand, spine, cerebral palsy, limb deformity, hip dysplasia, scoliosis, and rare genetic and metabolic conditions. Residents rotate during their PGY-1, PGY-3, and PGY-4 years and work on the same team as orthopaedic surgery residents from Walter Reed Medical Center, Howard University, and Georgetown University. Junior call is taken in-house.

Sibley Memorial Hospital is a 288-bed hospital located and level 2 trauma center in the Palisades neighborhood of Washington D.C. The rotation at Sibley exposes residents to a high-volume community orthopedic practice setting in adult reconstruction, sports medicine, shoulder and elbow, spine, hand, foot and ankle, and oncology. Residents rotate during their PGY-3, PGY-4, and PGY-5 years and work on the same team as orthopaedic surgery residents from Walter Reed Medical Center. Call is taken from home.
